Khuado
The term “Khuado” is a combination of two word – khua and do. Khua means a village or town. Khua indicates night time or darkness or whether i.e., khua-vak, khua-dam. Khua also refers to the deity Khuanu/ Khuazing. ‘Do’ on the other hand means to defend one or to attack.
Khuado, actually is the Harvest Festival and New Year celebration combine together. Khuado marks the end cycle of farming year and welcomes the new year. It is also the time of cleansing houses and the whole village in a ritual of exorcism of evil spirits. “Kum kikhen e, solkha dang ee, ziin in vang khua zong hen aw. Sian sung tuibang siang hen aw.” “The years are parting, the moon turns different, evil spirit would have left and the house will be clean like water”
Origin of Khuado: Some claim that Khuado would have been celebrated as early in Ciimnuai era as the time of Innpipa (headman/chief) Pu Tuah Ciang, around 1400 AD. In that case Khuado must have been celebrated more than 620 years by now.
Khuado is the most popular and the biggest festival of the year celebrated by the Zomi. Khuado takes place at the time after harvest. It falls during the Zo-months of Phal kha and Kau kha, in October. It is celebrated at different times in different villages due to that harvest time differs from place to place. But each village celebrates Khuado at the most appropriate time as chosen by the village priest, headman and elders considering fine weather, full moon and the time everyone is in the village.
Khuado is an occasion in which the villagers fight back the evil spirit and engage themselves in a sort of spirituality. Khuado is the cleansing of the house and the whole village in a ritual of exorcism of evil spirits, by lighting pine torches symbolizing the evil spirits are driven away and they do not re-enter the village. The light also are intended to welcome good spirits to come and reside in the village in the hope of brining good fortunes to the people.
During Khuado beehive is inspected by the priest and elders in order to predict if the coming year is promising with good harvest, good weather. Thus, one best significant beehive is chosen and bring to the village. By observing the behavior of the bee larvae and pupae, the priest predicts for the coming year will be good harvest with plenty of crop or a misfortune year.
