Community Messaging On TRIS
UNHCR has been advised by the Government that a company, Barisan Mahamega Sdn Bhd, has been appointed to carry out a Government registration scheme called the Tracking Refugees Information System (TRIS).
We are also advised that all registered UNHCR cardholders and asylum-seekers can register under this Scheme and will be provided a Government-issued Identity Card, MyRC, at a cost of RM500 per person. Only persons between aged 19 to 58 years of age are required to pay the fee.
This Scheme has been established by the Government to address its concerns around national security. At present, registration does not provide any legal rights to refugees in Malaysia.
The Government Scheme does not affect the entitlement of refugees to be registered by UNHCR nor the validity of any documentation currently provided by UNHCR.
A number of practical details of the Government Scheme remain unclear and we understand that the Government will provide further public explanation to refugees in due course.
UNHCR will keep you informed of any developments as and when these are communicated to us by the Government.
